Roots of Seahurst
A Local Legacy
The Seahurst Neighborhood is one of the oldest of the City of Burien. The block and property we are on was originally homesteaded in the late 1800’s and was developed to farm fruits. To this day many of those fruit trees still exist on our property and others on this block. Gottlieb Burian was one of the first settlers in the area and is the namesake of the city of Burien. He settled on Lake Burien only a few blocks from here.
In the early 1900’s the Three Tree Point neighborhood located a mile southwest of here on the Puget Sound and became a weekend resort area for prominent Seattleites. Isolated by not having any roads Three Tree Point became a stop for the Puget Sound mosquito fleet which was an early privatized ferry fleet that made stops along the Puget Sound coastline.

In 1912 the Highland Park and Lake Burien Railway began service. It was a 9 mile electric street car line that ran from Spokane Street in Seattle right up through Burien with its final stop in Seahurst. The Seahurst station still exists as the neighborhood post office on 21st St and 152nd Ave. The street car line only lasted 17 years but had a profound impact on the growth of Seahurst.

In 1913 Lake Burien Elementary School opened to serve the fledgling community and was located on the property of the park at the end of the block. Life Magazine featured the school in an article about overcrowded schools in the post-war America. The article was in the Sept 19th 1949 issue on “War Babies”. The school closed in 1976 and was demolished in 1992 to create the park that is here today. A commemorative arch to honor the school stands in the park as is a beautiful back drop to the summer live music concerts in the park that are held there every Thursday during the summer months.

Speaking of music, the classic rock band Heart had one of their early recording studios located next door the Handy Mart on 21st and 152nd where rock classics Barracuda and Magic Man were recorded. .

And, original Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr grew up in the Burien area too. True Crime author Ann Rule lived in Seahurst where she wrote many of here novels. John Requa is an American screenwriter who wrote “Cats and Dogs”, “Bad Santa” and directed “I love you Phillip Morris”.

Today Seahurst, and Three Tree Point are still quaint neighborhoods with quick access to the hustle and bustle of the big city of Seattle. For a nice short drive pop down to Three Tree Point on Maple Wild Ave and have a coffee or sip of wine in the old Three Tree Point Store now call QED Coffee or head up to Olde Burien and have a cocktail at the Tin Room. Throughout the year our community has many events like the Fathers Day Car Show and Strawberry Festival, The Burien UFO Festival, Thursday Farmers Market, 4th of July Parade, Olde Burien Block Party, Arts-A-Glow and the Burien Brot Trot to name more than a few. Seahurst Park
Lake Burien Memorial School Park
Seahurst Park is just a 10 minute walk or 2 minute drive from our property. Located right on the Puget Sound there is plenty of natural surroundings to discover. There are picnic shelters, acres of beach and forest trails to walk and hike. During prohibition times the famous Seattle bootlegger Roy Olmstead is said to have brought Canadian liquor through this beach to go to his warehouses. Many locals claim that to this day some of his booze is hidden in the woods of the park due to police raids on his boats. In the hiking trails there are still remnant of abandoned tools the early loggers used to log the forests which tells you how much old growth forest still exists in this area. Take a little walk down or drive and take in the nature. You'll see eagles, star fish and other sea and forest animals.
Lake Burien School Memorial Park is located at the end of the same block as our property. It provides 4.6 acres of active use space including open lawn area, tennis courts, walking trail, playground, and restrooms. The amenities of the park make it a great place for community events, such as summertime concerts. The park is the former site of the historic Lake Burien Elementary School.

Burien Farmers Market - Thursdays
Take a quick short scenic drive down Maplewild to Three Tree Point. Grab a coffee and a pastry at QED Coffee and savor the stunning view of the Puget Sound with Mount Rainier in the background. There is a little public beach where you can walk to and sit on the beach and enjoy the scenery too.
Burien's Farmers Market is open every Thursday and bustles with arts and crafts, fresh produce and plenty of food offerings. During the summer there are plenty of activities for the kids to do or you can grab a beer at Logan Brewery. The Farmers Market is located in the heart of Burien's commercial area where there are many restaurants and boutique clothing stores like Howard and Marge to checkout.
